When is surf season in Taghazout?
The short answer
Surf season runs September to April, peaking December through March with the biggest Atlantic swells. Water temperature: 16–18°C (wetsuit needed). Beginners can surf year-round on the beach breaks. Summer is flat but warm and cheap. Mornings are best — afternoon trade winds chop up the surface.
The Atlantic doesn't check a calendar, but it does have patterns.
**The main surf season runs September to April.** This is when the North Atlantic sends consistent swell to Morocco's west coast. The breaks around Taghazout — Anchor Point, Hash Point, Killer Point, Panoramas — light up with long, clean right-handers that make this coast famous.
**December through March is peak season.** The biggest and most consistent swells arrive during these months. Water temperature sits around 16–18°C — you'll want a 3/2mm wetsuit. Air temperature stays comfortable: 18–22°C during the day, dipping to 12–13°C at night. This is also when the village is busiest, with surf camps at full capacity and Anchor Point's lineup at its most crowded.
**September–November and March–April are shoulder season** — fewer people, still solid waves, warmer water. These months suit intermediate surfers who want uncrowded lineups. Summer (May–August) is flat for surfing but pleasant for swimming, beach life, and significantly cheaper accommodation.
Beginners can surf year-round at Panoramas Beach and the beach breaks closer to the village, where smaller waves are forgiving. The point breaks further north — Anchor Point, Killer Point — are for experienced surfers, especially when the swell gets overhead.
One thing the Instagram accounts won't show you: Taghazout's wind. The Alizé trade winds pick up most afternoons, especially in summer. Mornings are almost always glassier. The best surfers are in the water at dawn — not for the photos, but because the wind hasn't arrived yet.
